The throttle pedal
Its a direct connection your engine,how hard you press it depends on power of the engine what gear etc.
If all is well with your engine then you can avoid pressing it to hard.If your engine is running badly and not delivering the powr it should then you will press it a lot harder.
The wider the throttle the more fuel and air are drawn in and the more fuel you use
If your engines state of tune is out say a leaky injector is messing up fuel ratio in one cylinder, then power will nose dive causing you to mash the throttle further into the mat
Engine running faults always kill power either gradually or suddenly hence you adapt to them up until the point where the problem starts causing you grieve ie it wont climb hills or the fuel consumption as climbed into silly figures
